What is carbon offsetting?

Carbon offsetting is the process by which green house gas emissions from activities such as driving are matched against carbon reductions from high quality carbon credits. Carbon credits represent one metric tonne of CO₂ avoided or removed by a carbon reducing project.

What you get?

Every 3 months TOTALCARD green customers will receive an e-mail detailing their fleet emissions for the previous 3 months. A link on the email will allow you to access the web site of Carbon Clear where you can decide whether to off set your vehicle emissions directly with them.

If you decide to off set with Carbon Clear you will receive a certificate from Carbon Clear which you can use to support your fleet efficiency objectives and to communicate externally to clients that you are taking care of the environment.

Sudanese Project: Darfur Efficient Cook-Stoves, Sudan Based in the Darfur region of Sudan, this project provides modern stoves and fuel to low-income families allowing them to replace their traditional 3-stone fires. The switch to efficient fuels reduces indoor air pollution, saves money and improves health for the participating families.  As well as reducing carbon emissions, it also helps to protect Sudan's dwindling forests.

Carbon Clear is a world leading carbon management company that offers high quality carbon credits that do much more than save the environment.  Carbon Clear invests in projects that not only deliver robust carbon reductions but also provide social and livelihood benefits to communities in the developing world.

Total's contribution

In addition, TOTAL will contribute to the projects in paying 0.2 pence* per litre of EXCELLIUM fuels purchased by TOTALCARD green customers and 0.1 pence for normal fuels.

In other words, when you fill up your tank (50litres) with Excellium diesel, TOTAL will offset 9% of the emissions you will produce.

(50 litres of Excelium diesel generate 0.135 tones of CO2. In giving 10 pence to the carbon offsetting scheme (0.2*50), TOTAL will pay 9% of the contribution that would be required to offset the 0.135 tones of CO2)
