Our History

A legacy of easy, safe and reliable service

In early 1843 a young William Butler travelled to Bristol and founded the Butler Company. He started in the business of tar distillation, producing a variety of products which included creosote. The company prospered with the development of the motor car and the increase in demand for oil in all industry sectors, laying the foundations for a successful nationwide organisation.

It was not until 1935 that it became a public company. The company began to distribute greater and greater volumes of fuels to meet the demands of the Second World War and the ever-growing number of petrol-fuelled vehicles throughout the country.

Changing its name to Butler Chemicals in 1964, this family-run company continued to provide fuel and chemicals all over the UK, eventually changing to Butler Oil Products in 1972 to reflect how the company predominantly provided fuel over other chemicals. 'Totalheat', the wholly owned distributor of Total Oil, was also formed at this time.

In 1988, Butler Oil Products (then Butler Ltd) became a wholly owned subsidiary of Fina when they purchased the balance of shares. By 2000, Total had merged with Fina, which in turn merged with Elf Aquitaine to form TotalFinaElf. The following year in 2001, Totalheat and Butler Ltd merged to form TOTAL BUTLER therefore retaining the identity of the Butler Company.

With the legacy and local expertise of over 160 years along with the corporate accountability and safety of a worldwide oil company, TOTAL BUTLER can provide for your fuel needs like no other. You know where to turn.
