Gary Schofield

On Thursday, 16th May Total's Bitumen Division were proud to partner with Tarmac for this year’s first CPD day, taking place at Celtic Manor in The Usk Valley, South Wales. Presenting at the event was Richard Ashton, Market Development Manager, Total UK and Gary Schofield Technical and HSEQS Manager, Total UK.

More than 70 senior highways managers from local authorities across Wales and the South West attended the forum, designed to encourage collaborative working.

Richard Ashton kicked off the day’s proceedings in the morning with a summary of the 24th annual ALARM study led by the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA). The ALARM (Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance) study provides a snapshot of the condition of the local road network and funding.

ALARM study key findings:

  • Highway maintenance budgets up for the second consecutive year
  • An extra 3,500 more miles of local road now in target condition
  • Annual budget shortfalls continue to rise
  • If local authorities were able to meet their own targets across all road types this would mean more than 20,000 miles of improved roads.

Later, Gary Schofield talked about flexibility on the roads, and went into great detail about the benefits of using Total Styrelf Polymer Modified Bitumen.

Other speakers and topics in full:

  • Jon Munslow – South Gloucester Council – Funding challenges in local government
  • Simon Jones – Metis – Risk management vs asset management
  • Simon Shearwood – Norfolk County Council – Local Authority Pavement Innovation
  • Matt Wakelam – Cardiff Council – Taking back control

Did you know a pothole is filled in in the UK every 21 seconds?

Simone France, Senior Corporate Marketing Manager at Tarmac said: “Our partnership delivers a tangible commitment to support knowledge sharing. Giving customers the opportunity to share experiences, learn about new design solutions and think about sustainability across our road networks. The event at Celtic Manor was another 10/10 success. The Styrelf presentation again featuring in the top three sessions of the day.”

Toby Pyper, Regional Director South at Tarmac, also a speaker at the forum, said: “We are delighted with the positive feedback from delegates. The way we build, maintain and manage our roads is undergoing a period of unprecedented change with over-specification and sustainability increasingly offering opportunities to drive improvements. As the volume and expectations of road users continue to rise and local authority budgets face continued pressure, there is a growing recognition of the need for continued collaboration to improve the management of our highways.”

Rick Ashton, Market Development Manager Bitumen at Total UK, added: “This was another successful CPD day for Tarmac and Total Bitumen. Total enjoy collaborating and supporting these events around Tarmac’s regional customer bases. This strong partnership is delivering very tangible benefits for their clients through sharing best practice, driving efficiencies in the highways sector and assisting their customers optimise their materials selection.”
