Total Bitumen completes M62 and Mersey Gateway projects

Total Styrelf® Bitumen M62 Mersey Gateway

Total Bitumen recently celebrated the completion of two high-profile projects in northern England; the M62 J30-31 Surface Regeneration and Mersey Gateway toll bridge surfacing.

Helping rejuvenate existing infrastructure and create brand-new links to cut travel times and benefit local economies, both projects employed Total Styrelf® eXtreme 100 polymer-modified binder. With an innovative, cross-linked polymer matrix, the bitumen acts as a single, flexible unit, providing exceptional characteristics, both during laying and within the surface material itself.

The M62 bitumen project

Spanning the Pennines, the M62 is a key transportation route – department for Transport figures showed the Junction 30-31 section near Leeds saw 120,000 vehicles pass across it every day in 2017.

This 6.5km stretch, comprising 54.5 lane kilometres, required resurfacing with minimal disruption to drivers and needed a hard-wearing surface that would be resistant to fatigue, rutting and fretting. Designed to improve asphalt’s ability to withstand greater variations in temperature and load Total Styrelf® eXtreme 100 PMB was chosen for the project. The long-term durability of the binder has been a reference within the Tarmac Ultimate asphalt range for several years and reflects Total Bitumen’s ethos of sustainability through durability.

The project achieved productivity records for the client, Highways England, who saw over 1000 tonnes of asphalt installed per shift, minimising disruption to the travelling public and commercial users of this strategic national artery.

The Mersey Gateway Bridge bitumen project

Linking Widnes and Runcorn in Cheshire, the Mersey Gateway project aimed to improve travel times in busy South Liverpool, reducing the pressure on ageing road infrastructure and a critical piece of Liverpool’s recently created ‘multi modal gateway’. The bridge’s exposed location and design required a durable road surface with extended maintenance intervals to optimise highways asset management.

Total Styrelf® eXtreme 100 PMB was chosen as the binder for all 11km of asphalt surfacing. With its exceptional elasticity and resistance to fatigue, it was a natural choice for the bridge deck, guarding against the daily thermal and dynamic cycling encountered in these applications.

Our binders are designed to improve the safety, economy and longevity of asphalt. Discover more about Total Bitumen’s range of cutting-edge products, or contact the team for more information.
